Friday 8th of May 2020 was supposed to be a special bank holiday to celebrate 75 years since VE Day, marking the end of World War II. Huge street parties and town centre celebrations had been in the planning for months. But all this changed when the world went into lockdown to try and slow the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
Instead The Great British Public found a new way to celebrate.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon this wonderful street during my daily walk around Hertford. Everyone carefully adhered to social distancing rules and decorated their own front gardens with flags and bunting and brought out chairs and tables full of delicious food and drink.
I was fortunate enough to speak to some wonderful people with fascinating stories to tell. One lady showed me a letter she had received from King George apologising for how the war had affected her girlhood. Another couple displayed a wonderful array of photographs and personal letters from their grandparents in place of bunting.
Please be assured all of the residents as well as myself remained at a safe distance at all times during the afternoon! Including the Tesco delivery driver!
