SUMMER WEDDING IN HERTFORDSHIRE

Alžy and Marcus wanted to create a day that was truly theirs, with nods towards loved ones who couldn't share the day with them, as well as many personal touches and handmade elements. The day was relaxed, fun and emotional!

REAL WEDDING - BRIDE Q&A

Bride Alžy shares her thoughts about their perfect wedding day at Bishop's Stortford Register Office, Hertfordshire and afterwards at the George Inn, Little Hallingbury.

How did you both feel on the day?

"We both felt very excited on the day, and nervous that everything would go to plan."

Mother of the bride smiling fondly at the wedding dress hanging ready to be worn
"My wedding dress was my mum's wedding dress with some alterations to remove sleeves and train"

Any funny stories from the day?

"I was crying during the ceremony when it got to the "I do" part, I was getting quite flustered and struggling to get my words out. The registrar tried to help me relax and started complimenting me and said I look gorgeous. At the same time I had mustered up enough courage to say "I do" and it came out quite loud too - it was funny because it looked like I had very confidently agreed with the registrar that I do look gorgeous, rather than me saying "I do" for the vows!"

Which parts stood out for you the most?

"The photoshoot stood out for me the most. I enjoyed having some 1:1 time with Marcus and actually talking to each other properly and laughing - I felt relaxed for the first time that day.

"Marcus loved the speeches. He enjoyed laughing with his friends and family all in one room together."

What were your wedding “must have’s”?

Wedding bouquet featuring irises and cornflowers to remember grandparents

"To have nods towards our loved ones who couldn't share the day with us. We wanted to frame photos of them and incorporate something that reminded us of them in the day somehow. For example, for my paternal grandparents I had irises and cornflowers in my bouquet because my grandma was called Iris and my grandad's favourite flower was a cornflower."

Slovak family recipe served as wedding canapes

"For my maternal grandparents and uncles, they're Slovak so we had some Slovak food included in the canapés that my mum made with a smoked sausage that my grandad made."

Bride laughs as groom almost chokes on a bite of their Victoria sponge wedding cake

"For Marcus' paternal Nan, we chose to make our wedding cake a Victoria sponge because that was her favourite cake.

"For Marcus' cousin, we chose to have a 3 course meal because he jokingly hated buffets and would have loved that we had "proper food" for our meal.

For Marcus' maternal grandparents, we played their wedding video as our guests arrived at the pub while we had our photoshoot."

Styling your wedding: how did you personalise your big day?

"We made as many decorations as possible ourselves - wedding favours with handwritten messages, and decorations on the tables and around the pub and marquee."

"Our seating plan also had a drinks menu on the side: his drink, her drink and Poppy's drink. His drink was Marcus' favourite drink (dark n' stormy), her drink was my favourite drink (pink G&T) and Poppy's drink was a way of including Poppy, our cat, in the day and having a non-alcoholic drink on the menu (elderflower pressé).

"The cake knife belonged to Marcus' mum's family.

Marcus' dad made our ring box.

Our photoshoot spot was where Marcus used to play when he was a kid."

A sign reading 'My parents got married, please take a treat for your furry friends' next to glass jars of animal treats
"We love the pets in our lives and we wanted to do a little something to share our love for animals with our guests who have pets so we offered out cat and dog treats."

How did you entertain your guests?

"We didn't really entertain our guests but we did set up a photo booth and a kids corner with toys and activities for them to do to keep them busy and occupied if they got bored or tired. The photo booth went down well with the guests who used it, but most guests were just quite content chatting in the pub garden and dancing in the marquee once the DJ started."

"We were announced into the marquee on the dancefloor to You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne. Our first dance song was Stay With You by John Legend."

Who or what made your day extra special?

"Our bridesmaids and groomsmen made our day extra special - they helped out SO much with keeping things going, greeting and entertaining our guests.

Our florist, stationary provider and photographer (you!) were the best suppliers we could have asked for - you all went above and beyond for us leading up to the day and on the day! Simply spectacular!!"

If we could do it all again, we'd…

"find a way to spend more time with our guests together as a couple - we got pulled apart by different groups after an hour and then didn't see each other again until it was time to do the sparkler send off and get in a taxi."

"We might have changed the "first look" moment to be before I walked down the aisle so that we could have had a moment to calm our nerves and chat for a few minutes before not having an opportunity like that again until the photoshoot of just us two."

Your top wedding planning tips:

  • allow an extra 20-30 mins for everything to happen so nothing feels rushed or really behind schedule.

  • Delegate jobs to people for on the day so you've got less to worry about yourselves.

  • Try to spend as much time as you can together throughout the day, designate and schedule in time to spend just the two of you!

  • Don't do things that don't feel right for you, your day should be a reflection of who you are as people and as a couple, not a day of you conforming to society or other people's expectations if it doesn't suit you.

WHAT THE COUPLE SAY

"Sarah is the most lovely person and a talented, attentive photographer too! Our wedding photos are incredible and we're unbelievably over the moon with how they came out! Sarah made us feel comfortable and put us at ease during our photoshoot and for the rest of the day, we didn't even know she was there, capturing all the beautiful moments! I cannot recommend Sarah enough as a photographer, she's really truly amazing and we're so grateful that she captured our day so perfectly!!!

5+ stars!!!"
